Higginson Tower

Visit a restoration project in progress. The 175-year-old Higginson Observation Tower began life as a wind-powered gristmill. Around 1900, its builder, Lieutenant Thomas Higginson, converted the gristmill to an observatory tower, which measured 52 feet in height. The not-for-profit Higginson Tower Committee is working to raise about $110,000 to restore this tower to its circa-1900 use as an observatory. During the summer, the stonework on the tower ruins was re-pointed and an additional three feet of missing stonework was rebuilt. Once completed and open as a tourist attraction, visitors will be able to climb to the top for a spectacular view. Owned by Champlain Township, the site will also include a natural green space for special outdoor events, picnics and relaxation.
