The Township of Champlain is located east of Ottawa, the capital of Canada and west of "La ville de Montréal". We are within close proximity to major highways (401, 417 and 34) leading to the Victorian Town of Vankleek Hill. The Ottawa River flows along our community so you can also sail into our municipal marina located on the shores of the historic Village of L'Orignal. Cycle along one of many connecting links or, in the winter, snowmobile or cross-country ski through the agro-tourism sectors of West Hawkesbury and Longueuil wards.
Our "Can-Do" attitude based on a vibrant industrial, business and farming community fosters progressive economic growth in the Township of Champlain. The rural and urban residential developments provide "easy living" in a community offering day care, elementary and secondary education in the language of your choice. Local social groups cater to all ages and interests as do our modern recreational facilities and library service. This is a place to live, work, and play...
Mayor's Message - March 2010
The year 2010 will be a very busy time for Champlain Township. With financial support from the federal and provincial levels of government we will be completing three important infrastructure projects. The first project is the upgrade of the King Street Sewage Pumping Station in L’Orignal. We will be replacing the sewage pumps and installing a new generator at this site to replace equipment originally installed in 1977. The second project is the rehabilitation of the sewage lagoons in Vankleek Hill. Sludge will be removed from the lagoons and the mechanical equipment will be taken out of service and repaired. This work will extend the life of our treatment facilities and protect our environment. The third project is the replacement of the mechanical lift in our Arena with an elevator. We have had numerous problems with the lift which made accessibility to our community hall difficult since it is located on the second floor. The elevator will be a welcome improvement, especially for our senior citizens.
Economic development is also a priority for our Township. As our economy continues to improve we are looking for opportunities to provide employment for our residents. Mr. Jacques Des Becquets, our Economic Development Coordinator, is available to provide assistance to new companies and to support existing businesses that may be considering expansion. We want to encourage development of businesses in these tough economic times.
We also want to encourage everyone to increase the amount of recycling that is being collected in the Township. As you are probably aware, the Province has set a goal of reducing the waste going to landfill sites by 60%. During the last year, we had a very minimal increase in recycling tonnage. We have a long way to go to meet the provincial targets. Recycling is important; please help us increase our participation. For your information electronic items (e.g. old computers, printers, etc.) may now be recycled by dropping them off at “Groupe Convex / Recycle-Action”, 1588 Aberdeen Street, Hawkesbury. There is no charge for this service.
Please remember if you need to contact us after office hours for an emergency, you may call (613) 632-4111. The dispatch service will forward your call to the appropriate person to provide assistance. For fire, police or ambulance emergencies, please call 911.
On behalf of myself and the Councillors, please accept our wishes for a safe and healthy 2010.
Gary J. Barton, Mayor March 2010.
