Champlain, July 12, 2024 - Champlain Township Honours Two Local Inspirational Athletes

Champlain Township is proud to announce the recognition of two outstanding local athletes whose dedication and perseverance have greatly inspired our community. At the June 27 council meeting, Patrick Lalonde and Joey Desjardins were celebrated for their exceptional achievements and contributions.

Patrick Lalonde of Longueuil Ward
A local physiotherapist and organizer of La Baie Run, Patrick Lalonde has made headlines with his impressive mountaineering accomplishments. Featured on the cover of “Alpinist 84” magazine, Patrick was photographed ascending Mount Katahdin in Maine. Beyond climbing, Patrick is an avid skier, marathon runner, and cyclist, known for completing the Appalachian Trail. His dedication to both his profession and his passions exemplifies the spirit of resilience and community engagement. Patrick was honored with the Champlain 2024 Inspirational Athlete Award.

Joey Desjardins of West Hawkesbury Ward
After a life-changing dirt-bike accident in 2009, Joey Desjardins turned to para-cycling, driven by his meeting with Paralympic legend Rick Hansen. His journey has been marked by remarkable achievements, including a bronze medal at the 2019 World Championships and participation in the 2021 Tokyo Paralympics. Joey's story of overcoming adversity and his relentless pursuit of excellence serves as a powerful inspiration to all. He was also awarded the Champlain 2024 Inspirational Athlete Award and is set to compete in the World Championships in Zürich, Switzerland this September.

 "On behalf of Council, it is my great honour to recognize Patrick Lalonde and Joey Desjardins for their incredible achievements. Their stories of resilience and determination are truly inspiring, and they remind us all of the power of perseverance. They have not only excelled in their respective sports but have also made significant contributions to our community. We are proud to have them represent Champlain Township."
