Your Impact & Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will shape the future of the Township by supporting sustainable development, advising decision-makers, and ensuring compliance with planning legislation. You will play a key role in fostering economic development and enhancing the quality of life within the community.
Responsibility Areas & Key Activities
- Lead the review and update of the Township’s Official Plan and Zoning By-laws to ensure legislative compliance and alignment with community goals.
- Manage development applications, including preparing site plan agreements and coordinating public consultation processes.
- Administer and enforce planning documents such as the Official Plan, zoning regulations, and subdivision agreements.
- Conduct site inspections and prepare detailed reports and recommendations on planning and building matters.
- Identify and pursue funding opportunities, grants, and investment prospects to support municipal development.
- Develop and maintain databases, tracking systems, and performance indicators for planning initiatives.
- Collaborate with local, regional, and provincial partners to promote growth and development opportunities.
- Contribute to corporate leadership through participation in the senior management team, supporting strategic objectives and policy development.
Who You Will Work With
You will work closely with the Chief Administrative Officer, Mayor and Council, and Committees of Council to support informed decision-making on planning matters. You will collaborate with the Township’s Senior Management Team and staff across departments, as well as engage with external stakeholders including developers, businesses, government agencies, and members of the public to advance planning initiatives and community development objectives.

What You Bring
- University degree in Planning or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Membership in good standing with the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) and/or the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI), or eligibility for membership.
- Valid Class “G” driver’s licence with a clean driving record.
- Satisfactory Police Criminal Record Check.
- Minimum of five (5) years of municipal planning experience, including at least two (2) years in a rural setting.
- Experience presenting to the public and decision-makers.
- Experience conducting research and preparing recommendations.
- Experience creating and maintaining databases or information management systems.
- Strong command of the English language is essential.
- Bilingualism (English and French) is an asset.
- Project management experience and budgeting knowledge are also assets.
What You Can Expect
- This is a full-time, regular position with 37.5 hours per week, providing work-life balance while meeting the demands of municipal service.
- The Township of Champlain offers a competitive compensation package with the salary ranging from $99,216 to $118,326 per year. The salary is determined upon hire based on your qualifications, experience, skills, and knowledge.
- 4 weeks vacation plus 1 week time in lieu of overtime.
- A combination of office-based work and site visits within the Township.
- Regular interaction with the public, including in potentially challenging situations.
- Occasional evening and additional hours required to attend Council meetings, committees, and events.
- Work governed by legislative timelines and Council priorities.
