The Township of Champlain is seeking to create a pool of dynamic and motivated individuals to fill Permanent Full-Time and Part-Time Contract positions.
This position is responsible for operating all roads equipment, as required. It is also responsible for maintaining logbooks regarding equipment operated and day-to-day activities performed.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs year-round maintenance functions on roads, equipment, and municipal buildings.
- Responds promptly to emergency situations, i.e., severe storms, road blockages, winter storm events, etc.
- Operates graders, backhoes, trucks, snowplows, mowers, and all other heavy machinery owned by the Municipality.
- Performs labourer duties and road patrols.
- Completes written reports regarding roadwork completed and road conditions observed that could require maintenance and daily equipment logs.
- Assists with road construction.
- Performs minor mechanical repairs and service on assigned equipment.
- Assists with repairs and maintenance to water, wastewater, and storm water systems.
- Participates in staff training.
- Performs other related duties as may be assigned.
Qualifications
- A High School diploma.
- A minimum one-year road-related program (e.g., T.J. Mahony Road School), or an equivalent combination of courses and experience.
- Significant relevant experience operating heavy equipment and snowplowing.
- A valid Ontario DZ class Drivers License (Class AZ would be an asset).
- Good oral and written communication skills in both English and French (Bilingual)
- Some knowledge of equipment maintenance.
- Knowledge of road maintenance and construction practices
- The physical ability to carry out manual labour.
- A valid First A secondary Aid & CPR certificate or be willing to be trained.
- A satisfactory current Police Criminal Record Check OR are willing to have one carried out prior to employment.
Working Conditions
- Pay Level 4a: Hourly rate one of five steps ranging from $29.13 to $34.74.
- 40-hour work week, working day shifts from Monday to Friday.
- On-call shifts during the winter schedule and critical situations during other seasons.
- Regular exposure to temperature extremes, inclement weather, dust, dirt, waste, etc.
- Moderate to heavy physical activity.
- Sitting or driving for periods of more than two hours requiring heightened attention.
- Lifting objects that may exceed 22 kg for periods of one to two hours.
- Exposed to physical hazards and danger while working with or near heavy equipment.
- Potential stress related to meeting deadlines or working in emotionally charged situations.
Conditions of Employment
- Must be willing and able to work irregular hours performing normal tasks or others, as assigned.
- Must be “on call” 24/7 at all times during the winter season and occasionally during other seasons to attend at emergency and weather situations. This requires being willing and able to get to the garage within 30 minutes of the Patroller’s call.
