September 3, 2026, Township of Champlain - Rail Safety Week will take place from September 21 to 27, 2026, and the Township of Champlain is joining CN in reminding residents of the importance of staying safe around railway tracks and crossings.
Rail Safety Week is an opportunity to raise awareness about the risks of trespassing on railway property and ignoring signs, signals and barriers at railway crossings. Rail safety is a shared responsibility, and simple precautions can help prevent serious injuries and save lives.
Rail Safety by the Numbers
The impact of unsafe behaviour around railway tracks and crossings remains significant:
- In 2024, there were 261 railway crossing and trespassing incidents in Canada.
- These incidents resulted in 68 fatalities and 58 serious injuries.
- Across North America, there are more than 2,000 crossing incidents and 1,000 trespassing incidents each year.
Most incidents involving crossings and trespassing are preventable.
Be Rail Smart
When approaching railway tracks or crossings:
- Stop a safe distance from the tracks.
- Look both ways and make sure no trains are approaching.
- Listen for approaching trains.
- Never walk, cycle or drive around lowered gates or activated warning signals.
- Never use railway tracks as a shortcut or recreational path.
- Remember that trains can travel on any track, at any time and from either direction.
Because of their size, trains can appear farther away or travel more slowly than they actually are. They also require a significant distance to come to a complete stop.
