July 23, 2026, Township of Champlain - After 41 years of dedicated service, the Township of Champlain is proud to recognize the retirement of Karen Hunter, whose commitment, professionalism, and knowledge have left a lasting mark on the organization.
Karen began her municipal career with the former Township of West Hawkesbury in 1984 as an accounting secretary. A lifelong West Hawkesbury resident, she went on to serve in several key roles throughout her career, including Public Works Secretary, Accounting & Tax Clerk, Utility Billing and Payroll Clerk, and, since 2018, Deputy Treasurer.
Known for her quiet dedication and unwavering work ethic, Karen has been a trusted resource for colleagues, Council, and staff alike. Over the years, she became a trusted source of institutional knowledge for generations of Council members and employees, helping guide the organization through decades of growth and change.
Looking back on her career, Karen says municipal government has changed tremendously over the years. New legislation, regulations, technologies, reporting requirements, and evolving expectations meant there was always something new to adapt to.
"Municipal government is constantly evolving," said Karen. "Things were always changing. You had to keep learning, adapt to new requirements, and stay up to date. It was definitely challenging." Karen says she will miss seeing many of the people she worked with over the years and the daily routines that became such a big part of her life.
As she begins this new chapter, Karen plans to first enjoy some well-earned time for herself after 41 years of service. She looks forward to spending more time walking, cross-country skiing, gardening, and simply taking life a little slower. That said, she doesn't see herself staying retired forever. Staying active and continuing to work a few hours here and there is important to her, and she hopes to find the right opportunity when the time is right.
"Karen has dedicated more than four decades to serving our municipality with professionalism, integrity, and remarkable dedication," said Mayor Normand Riopel. "She was often the first to arrive in the morning and one of the last to leave at the end of the day. That kind of commitment speaks to the pride she took in serving our residents and supporting her colleagues. Karen's knowledge and experience have been invaluable to the Township, and she has been a steady presence through decades of change. On behalf of Council and the entire community, I sincerely thank Karen for her years of service and wish her every happiness in this well-deserved retirement."
