Retaining Walls

Scope of Work

A building permit is required when constructing a retaining wall that is:

  • On or adjacent to public property, building entrances.
  • On private property accessible to the public, and
  • Where the height is more than 1 metre (3’-3”) in height at any location.

Required Inspections

Excavation

Footing: at completion of formwork, prior to pouring concrete. Soil Bearing Capacity Report required before pouring.

Foundation

Required at completion of formwork before pouring concrete when designed by an engineer.

Before Backfilling

Required before backfilling the foundation.

Occupancy

A person may occupy a dwelling provided that an occupancy permit has been issued by the building inspector. To be eligible there must be no outstanding Building Code Orders and certain building components and systems must be complete and inspected under Division C 1.3.3.

Final Inspection

Required upon completion of the building.
